SAP, Department of Architecture, Anna University-Chennai alongwith Alliance Francaise recently held an exhibition on Brasilia and Chandigarh. What was more important to architects is the fact that Architect Oscar Neimeyer continues to design and visit his office at the age of One hundred and two. The works are today considered heritage with Neimeyer infusing the early symbolism of the modernist movement, influenced by Le Corbusier. Recently published books reveal more of this mysterious symbolism- The impact of this can be seen in the works of Steven Holl, Siza, Rem Koolhaas, Gehry and Leibeskind today. A reassessment of the history of Architecture is probably essential at this stage.

Can he symbolism infused by a single architect - have any legitimacy for society ? How can we differentiate between the indiosyncrasies of an architect from the collective representation of cultural meanings?

the act of signification happens through tradition. The modernist framework could never appropriate this process of signification - this made the city a utilitarian device without any meanings. Ancient cities were imbued with meanings -

By that argument - does it imply urbanity is incapable of recovering its lost historic memories and meanings - the strategum of corbusier suggests it should be possible. Or are we too far fetched !!!!

maybe architectural education requires a rethink - should it not become more sensuous - all five senses along with theory - as of now its more on the drawing table for five years and very little time with materials and building as an experience -

I learnt more from building vaults at site - than all the drawings done before the actual site experience -
