Quite a few coastal communities near cities or towns have mixed vocations - besdies fishing community there are various other professions too - carpenters, masons, school teachers, engineering and economics college students, - so the character of these settlements is changing - architects now have to look at the broader picture rather than planning homogenous communities - The ecological dimension is also crucial - rain water harvesting, green buildings and solar energy. The way in which the fishing community uses the open space also depends on the kind of boats they own , which in turn depends on the nature of the sea (rough sea, calm sea, deep sea etc).

How imnportant/crucial/essential are olden fishing traditions, habits? What would we lose if we entirely modernise the fishing habits of the fishing community..?

Fishing habits probably have to be modernised - so that the community gets the benefit of modern technology - though many of the fisherman feel that traditional fishing practices are logical, practical, cost effective, and come from long years of experience. So maybe, we need to strike a right balance between them ! This may also in some way impact the design of houses and villages along the coast !!!!depends........
