URBAN DESIGN in architecture schools -
In the architectural education curriculum, urban design probably needs to be evovled keeping the design aspect as the focus. Most often the tendency is to take up large scale projects that end up being planning exercises - without the architectural exploration.
Suggested process -
1. Mapping of the sector/neighbourhood for study - involves measured drawing. google images, land use patterns, population densities, road networks, built form analysis, nodes and key institutions.
2. Study of history and its tranforming significance over time
3. Analysis and evolution of broad guidelines of intervention - that could evolve to refining the building regulations.
4. Creating framework for intervention
5. The project - is an intervention that fulfills the above exploration. - involves program of the institution, literature studies, design - from schematic to detailed drawings.

Feel good......
When we did urban design semester, most of the time went in grasping the enormous scale of the project - maybe if schools of architecture created a common data base - it would help students explore the architectural aspects of the design too - Michele
