thesis-a broad framework

This blog is an attempt to clarify the various generic doubts existant in students about the architecctural concepts and issues. What exactly is the clarity all masters talk about, how does one look at buildings and learn from them, the basics of architectural language, skills and fundas of this subject,...do buildings really talk.students at various levels are always full of questions . .
is architecture really so complicated.?

CHAOS.. evryone around is so full of it. .
philosophy,Ecology,modernism,order,function,program,priority,design,climate,
datum,materials,technology...

Architecture can embrace all this all at once.
But the question is where do we begin.

LEts begin here....

1.Architecture
- " nature " is the context
- " shelter is man-made
architecture embodies the relationship between nature and the manmade

2.Basic function of architecture is to "shelter"from harsh forces of nature.

3.The notion of 'concept' or the idea that motivates design

Concepts of traditional houses

4.Understanding context of site
-site boundary
- contours,trees
-climate
-surroundin/buildings/river etc
- roads/nature of roads
- location
- materials / technology -locally available

understanding materials

- colors
- character of region
- recognizing the "needs " -functional equirements and creating a building program
For this purpose it is important to study plans of existing buildings and their functioning-and how they are used. This helps to create area statement, modify it or add nw functions-This is the relavance of references and literature studies.

5. relationship between needs-hierarchy,privacy,public space requirement, any other specific functional neds.Louis Khan-"Served spaces and servant spaces "-main spaces, core spaces and services.

6.basic aspects in design process
- nature of boundary
- sense of arrival
- structuring the path-orientation/path/node
- The core o heart of building
- The skin/periphery-study of sectons
- forms-aspect of forms
- quality of space
- quality of light
- directions - north south east west
- ordering - deciding the structure,grid,bay widths,module,geometry
-theme and variations - (basic module, geometry and variations )
- the plan/sections and elevations

7. understanding the potential of architectural elements ( form and spaces )
- plinths/level differences
- wall
- columns / collonades
- pergola
- path
- types of windows ( various categories )
- skylights silhoutte
- courtyard ( with changing scales )
- water body
- pavillion
- basements
- north lights
- types of steps / stairs
- materials/ technologies

8. Analysis of plan / sections
-what the architectural elements establish
- understanding forms
-meanings elements covey
-ecology sustainaibility-through architectural responses-with solar/water etc.

This blog is totally dedicated to architectural education
to help students open up and respond to their projects at college.
Watch out for links and reference data here..
Incase u do have any doubts of any kinds please post it as a response to this blog.

how do we choose a thesis project that would satisfy both the staff involved and also us?or rather is it necesarry that we need to choose according to what the staff needs?
some of our ideas arent completely taken up by the staff...they tend to put in their own ideas that would be strategically different
from what we would have put forth to them...
how do v minimise this intrusion of the staff into our own ideas and thoughts for the thesis project?

hi!
briefly, thesis is the culmination of all that learnt during the five years.
Major emphasis thus should be
Selection of topic ( keeping in mind the time frame for completion of thesis and the practical aspects to make the project ),
exploration of architectural concepts like the ones discussed in the blog,
all these can be realised only through constant discussions with the experienced.
in that process whatever objections are put forward ,(sometimes useful sometimes othertimes subjective)can be dealt with keeping in mind the purpose of the project!
clarity in th project and logical decision making and a well thought project would definitely help.
